I want to tell you about one of my very favorite cook books.  Maggie Green has put together a must-have kitchen resource, called the Kentucky Fresh Cookbook.   I’m not what you’d call a food expert, nor am I a book reviewer by trade, but I’m still going to give you my two cents on the Kentucky Fresh Cookbook.

I received my copy for my birthday from my sweet cousin Laura, who just so happens to be a friend & neighbor of Maggie Green.  Upon opening the book I was immediately drawn in to it.  I sat and read through it one evening and by the time I was finished there were countless post-its marking recipes that I couldn’t wait to try.  When I say “I read through it”, I mean that this is not just a cookbook.  Maggie put together a collection of seasonal recipes, organized by month to provide you with a year of classic Kentucky recipes.  And interspersed throughout the cookbook are sweet stories about her family, notes about why she chose these particular recipes, and a little bit of Kentucky history.  Maggie has written such clear directions & provides helpful advice and tips.  She makes cooking seem easy & fun. There are recipes for every season & every occasion in this cookbook…looking for a dish to take to a potluck?  Try the Bowtie Pasta with Spinach & Almonds.  Or there’s the perfect healthy breakfast option, Multigrain Flapjack Mix (our family loves these!).  And for the Keeneland fans out there, she has a recipe for Burgoo.  Our favorite so far though has been the Skillet Red Beans, they are out of this world.  Some cookbooks can be hit or miss, with only a few really good recipes.  But not The Kentucky Fresh Cookbook – every recipe I’ve tried so far has been delicious!  And I have many more bookmarked to try in the near future.  I know that you will love this cookbook too.  And if you have this cookbook in your collection already, think about giving it away as a gift.  This cookbook has become my go-to wedding shower gift, accompanied with family recipe cards.
