Do you have a reluctant reader at your house?  Or perhaps a child who is just getting a grasp of reading?  Might I recommend a Frankie Pickle Maxgreat series for early readers…the Frankie Pickle books by Eric Wight.  These books were recommended to me when we visited the Blue Marble Bookstore a while back.  Max was in second grade, and he wasn’t digging reading.  It was a chore.  He COULD read, he just did not have much interest.  He did however love magazines, comics and graphic novels.  I asked a gentleman at Blue Marble to recommend a book based on Max’s interests and Frankie Pickle is the book he handed me.  Max was immediately engrossed in the book, unable to put it down until it was finished.  This book was a turning point in his reading career.  He tore through the series, and all of a sudden reading wasn’t as much of a chore as it was before.  He started reading more and more, and without any nagging from me.  He still prefers the graphic novels, and I have to remind him to try other books, but he reads each day of his own volition.  I couldn’t be more proud.  Now we are in the same situation with Sam, he’s just starting to get interested in reading and starting to read more fluently.  I can’t wait to introduce him to the Frankie Pickle series.

I haven’t read the Frankie Pickle series, so I can’t really give a review of the books, all I can attest to is that they were a game-changer for Max.   The books were apparently hilarious, because he laughed out loud as he read them, and the topics appeal to children from ages 7-1o, the main character is a boy, but I’ve heard that girls like these books too.  The books tackle issues that many young children have to deal with: homework, messy rooms and a race car derby.  Max has read and re-read this series, I’m so glad we found it!  Now if only Eric Wight would write some more Frankie Pickle books!  Frankie Pickle Books
