I’ve never really been a fan of cauliflower until just recently.  Michael came home from the store with purple cauliflower and broccoli a few weeks Steamed Broccoli + Purple Cauliflowerback with the thought that maybe the kids would be willing to try cauliflower if it was purple.  And in fact, he converted me.  Purple is my favorite color so I gave it a try.  I’m a child at heart.  Or maybe it’s the fact that a little bit of butter and salt make everything taste delicious?  Whatever the reason, steamed broccoli & cauliflower is now a favorite side dish around here.  I still don’t eat cauliflower raw…just not a fan.  But I do love it steamed!

Steamed Broccoli & Cauliflower ::

There are a few different methods for steaming veggies, we use a little metal steamer basket that fits inside of our pan.

What you need:

1 head Broccoli

1 head Cauliflower

Water

Butter (optional – just a bit)

Kosher Salt (optional – just a pinch or two)

Directions:Broccoli + Purple Cauliflower

Put about an inch and a half of water in the bottom of a sauce pan and bring it to a boil over med-high heat.  Once it is boiling carefully put the steamer basket in the pan and dump in the broccoli & cauliflower (I fill it to the top of the pan but not too high because the lid needs to be completely closed).  Put the lid on the pot and steam for about 5-7 minutes.  I start checking it after about 4 minutes.  We know ours is finished when a fork goes into a piece of broccoli or cauliflower easily.  We like it still a little firm, not too mushy.  When the veggies are steamed to your liking drain them and toss with just a tad bit of butter and salt and then ENJOY!
