My friend Liz invited our family to the UnMuseum at the Contemporary Arts Center downtown on January 25th, which just so happened to be Henry’s 4th birthday. I told the kids that this was Henry’s birthday party, since I knew it would be a festive day at the museum. Liz had prepared a “Family Saturday” event based on photographer JR, whose art was being showcased at the Contemporary Arts Center at the time. She had made plans for t-shirt painting, necklace making, a photo booth, cookie decorating, and a special storytime with Ms. Amy from the Covington Library. It was sure to be a grand day! But then it snowed on that Saturday. Of course. Have you ever told a four year old that his birthday party was cancelled? It was rough. Luckily, there was sled riding to cheer him up. And then Ms. Liz rescheduled the event for the following weekend. So Henry had his birthday party at the UnMuseum a week late. Ms. Liz even made him his own special party hat and had a few little treats for him. We have known Ms. Liz and Ms. Amy for years from the Covington Library, and not only do the kids adore them, but both ladies are always super sweet on my munchkins. After the kids participated in all of the wild and crazy activities we spent time exploring the rest of the UnMuseum…which is always an interesting experience!
The UnMuseum is a special section of the Contemporary Arts Center designed for children to explore art and have fun. I highly recommend a family field trip to visit this cool art space for kids (kids of all ages that is…I always have fun at the UnMuseum too). Make sure you plan to go when it’s a Family Saturday, each month they offer different activities, and with Ms. Liz in charge I can assure the activities are going to be unique and engaging! Family Saturdays take place on the last Saturday of the month from 1-4 pm.
The UnMuseum also has Thursday Art Play, which is also a great experience for the little ones. We first attended one two years ago, I just stumbled across this blog post about our first trip to the UnMuseum and now I want to cry, Henry looks so little in these pictures!
Disclaimer :: I was given passes for the Contemporary Arts Center so that I could visit the UnMuseum’s Family Saturday event for review purposes. The opinions are most definitely 100% my own, I love going to art programs at the UnMuseum!
