One of my favorite things to do is to take long meandering drives along winding country roads. Today we took a drive to Warsaw, Kentucky to check out the Markland Dam. The Markland Dam (or Markland Locks and Dam) is a dam bridge and locks that spans the Ohio River connecting Gallatin County in Kentucky and Switzerland County in Indiana. On the Indiana side of the dam there is a playground and park, while on the Kentucky side of the dam there is a viewing tower and a picnic area. We timed our visit perfectly and were able to stand atop the tower and watch the water be lowered and raised to allow a small boat and a larger barge pass through. It was a pretty cool sight! My only regret is that we did not have the time to linger and explore the charming river town of Warsaw. We’ll have to make a day of it next time we go! If you are ever traveling along Route 42 in Gallatin County I suggest a stop at the Markland Dam!
