West Sixth Brewing in Lexington, KYLexington Mini-Vacation :: In January of 2015 we took the kids to Lexington, KY for a long weekend.  We spent two nights and three days exploring Lexington.  We crammed as much fun as we could into those three days with activities for both the kids and the parents.  Lexington is a perfect place for my family to escape to for a long weekend or even just a day trip because it’s just over an hour away from where we live.  We had such fun on our trip, and the kids are already asking when we’ll be going again.  I’m going to share our adventures with you in a series of installments so you can see pictures from our excursions and maybe find some inspiration for planning your own getaway to Lexington!

West Sixth Brewery, FoodChain & Smithtown Seafood:

Lexington West Sixth FlightUpon arriving in Lexington for our long weekend we made our first stop at West Sixth Brewing to share a flight and grab lunch.  I had also made plans for us to take a tour of FoodChain, which is a non-profit that uses aquaponics for sustainable food production.   There’s a beautiful circle of life system going on inside the “Bread Box” building that houses West Sixth, FoodChain and Smithtown Seafood.  Spent grains from the beer brewing process at West Sixth are incorporated into the food that is fed to the Tilapia that are raised at FoodChain.  Then the tilapia are served up at Smithtown Seafood for a delicious, sustainable meal.  Three different entities all working together under the same roof to create magic.  It’s really a cool neighborhood hangout where you can  learn about brewing, aquaponics, sustainable food production and farm to table meals.

Henry had a little bit of a time out on an old Rainbo Bread bench….a throwback from the days when the building was home to a bread factory:

Lexington Smithtown Seafood SignLunch From Smithtown Seafood:

You can order a fresh, farm-to-table lunch from Smithtown Seafood and have it delivered to you right next door at West Sixth Brewing.  The food was AMAZING.  Michael had a burger with an egg on top while the kids and I split some fish, fries and hush puppies.  The kids loved the whole tilapia, although Henry kept referring to one of the fish as “the happy fish” which seemed a little wrong…

Lexington West Sixth Settlers of CatanWe just so happened to come to West Sixth on a day when there was a fresh layer of snow on the ground, so not many people were venturing out of their houses in Lexington.  We were able to get a great table near the big screen TV to watch the Wildcats play basketball while we dined on Tilapia from Smithtown Seafood after we took the tour of FoodChain.  After the game we decided to stay a little bit longer and hang out at West Sixth to play some board games and catch up on some reading.  We considered taking a tour of the brewery as well, but the kids won out and we games instead, promising ourselves that next time we are in Lex we’ll take the tour.  This afternoon at West Sixth was  perfect start to our fun weekend in Lexington!
